Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.24 PM

Hi everyone, I want to remove my chimney on ground floor and 1st floor only leaving the stack in the loft and above roof intact. I can do the job myself and support the top bit. I only need to know who do I need to inform about my following modifications and what legal actions do I have to take, also whether or not I need a permition to do that. Thank you in advance

You need building regulations and possibly a structural engineer report, and or party wall agreement, if the chimney stack is on a party wall adjoin a neighbours property. I would advice not doing this yourself, as supporting the chimney in the loft require a RSJ/Gallows brackets installed. Regards Frankie BT Roofing Services Limited

you'll likely need to speak to a structural engineer and need building regulations to look at it also, would also speak to neighbours if its a wall between the two property's, would always advise seeking professional advise for jobs like this. regards Harry HJBarlowDevelopmentsltd

Hi, You will definitely need a Structural Engineer to design the structural supports and provide the relevant calculations for Building Control approval. So, you'll also need to appoint a Building Control inspector, either private or from the Council. If the chimney is on a shared wall between properties, then you will have to get a Party Wall agreement with your neighbours for carrying out the works. I hope this helps.
