space between air brick and kitchen unit

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.23 PM

Hi dont know where exactly to post this so dropped it here ok as the title space between air brick and kitchen base unit i have rearranged kitchen and replaced units around air brick there was previously units in the same place but it was a corner unit and if i recall correctly there was a void there in unit design my issue is now i have a damp musty smell in the kitchen and i am wondering if this is caused by my units being in front of two air brick feeds (holes) there is about a 10cm gap between unit and wall (air brick vent hole internal side) am i correct in thinking ive fudged it up by putting units so close and could i just block air brick hole/vents off and put air brick or vents elsewhere in kitchen Thanks

The damp musty smell could be anything . Usually associated with rising damp . Airbricks should help provide ventilation but where are the situated ? If near a grid that could be the problem . Bad smells from the grid ? You really need to get someone out to look at it

The kitchen units have a service space of about 75mm from the wall to the back of the unit . If the backs of the side of the unit have not been cut off to thr point of wear you need to fix the unit to the wall then you have inclosed the air vent between the width of the unit and not given enougth air flow . You can cut some air vent grills into the kick boards to allow more air to flow this should help . Kind regards Rob

Well this is not that simple at all as bas smell could be caused by multiple reasons. Without checking and seeing it is hard to analyse or answer your problem. However if you have damp and musty smell, after removing the units you should see where it is coming from. Also if the air pricks are to low outside, it could mean that the moisture and water could leak into the house. I would suggest to get a professional out and let them investigate the teal reason and then you can act accordingly.
