Cost-effective solution to raise a garden floor by 20cm

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.39 PM

Hi, please help as struggling with the right approach and on a tight budget We have a rectangular garden space immediately outside of kitchen for a patio to be done It measures 4m by 7.5m so 30m The issue is from the kitchen rear door it's a 20cm drop then a 20cm step up from the wouldbe patio to the grassed area Our quotes are naturally high as there are various solutions, aggregate, hardcore, concrette base all needing to be done Any ideas what can be done by ourselves to get the cost down? How could we raise it enough for minimal work to be needed for slabs to be put down Ideas and thoughts welcome Thank you

You need a 20cm drop under door because the ground should be lower than the damp course. So maybe decking is the answer

If you're slabs are 5cm and your sand or lean mix is 5cm then you need 10 cm of crushed concrete. If that goes over your budget then you can not afford to do it. Because if you don't do it right then you have wasted your time and the money you do have.

The step must be 150mm below door sill to allow for damp issues. If you want it flush from door sill to garden area then decking would be the answer. A framework of 4x2 with 30mm deckboards (timber or composite) will still be ok because it’s only concrete or hard surfaces that need to be 150mm lower. You can line this area with damp proof membrane and create a step down to patio. Or you can raise ‘a patio’ level to damp course if you leave a gap between house and slabs, they do this a lot on new builds for wheelchair access. As for cheap materials to use to raise this area. Hardcore is cheapest. If you know anyone in the building trade. Hardcore is a common waste product so should be cheap or free. Hope this helps

ideally you need a 150mm step down to ground level from the top of the damp proof level, so you are only 50mm difference.
