Gas supply capped off
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.39 PM
Due to a leak, my gas meter has been disconnected and the supply capped off on the incoming pipe by SGN. I've now been told by SEE that I'll need to get a private engineer to uncap the supply and reconnect the meter. Is this correct?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Correct. Gas network providers are only responsible for incoming gas pipe and gas meter. You as a homeowner are responsible for condition of your gas pipework and appliances. Private engineer will have to locate leak inside your property, repair it, test to make sure its all ok and he will remove cap from the gas meter. It is also common for him to issue gas safety certificate.

Yes emergency gas company only cap off meter Then down to homeowner to find a Gas safe engineer to look for leak and repair unless the meter is faulty then down to gas supplier

Yes this is correct. Any pipework/appliances after the meter is your responsibility so you will have to get a gas safe reg engineer to trace where the leak is.

Assuming I've read your question correctly, you have a leak "downstream" of the meter, ie; on the pipework inside your home, or on your appliances.
If so, then yes, a private Registered Gas Installer would be needed to trace, repair and reinstate the gas supply.

If the leak was upstream of the meter then this is the responsibility of your provider. Once leak repaired, you will need to have an independent engineer connect as he/she will check the whole downstream system which the provider is not responsible for.
Sometimes a provider may have a service plan but generally this will

Yes this is correct, as the leak has been identified on your property the gas provider has a responsibility to make safe your property and surrounding properties. It is then the responsibility of the house holder / owner if rented to make good any defects that lie within the property, the gas engineer must not uncap the meter and leave uncapped without first obtaining a satisfactory tightness test on the internal gas carcass / appliances.

Yes that is correct once the leak has been traced and repaired the meter can be uncapped. All work will need to be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

If the leak is suspected to be inside the dwelling then the homeowner will need to seek a gas engineer who works from meter outlet to appliances. It has been capped off for safety until the leak is detected and rectified by a registered engineer.
