How to get a detailed invoice and receipt from a plasterer who promised to supply them

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.39 PM

I engaged Estuary Plastering to do some outside render work on behalf of an elderly relative who lives a long way from me. Contractor doing other work for her gave me his details. I thought he was one of their employees so my guard was down. When he viewed job, he gave verbal quote of £1100 plus VAT and said he would give a detailed invoice and receipt. He asked for cash. He did job though not to standard he had led me to expect. She paid cash as she was on her own and felt intimidated. I have tried numerous times to get a detailed invoice and receipt and he just keeps saying his wife emailed it when she was at work. Any suggestions please?

If you sell a customer a product or a service, you need to give them an invoice (bill) by law if both you and the customer are registered for VAT. An invoice is not the same as a receipt, which is an acknowledgement of payment, when the customer must pay you.

I'm afraid it's very simple , never hand over any money whatsoever until job is completed and your happy with work done also to be vat registered you should check companies House and that tells you if company is legally vat registered again no money should change hands , you've no proof if giving cash so sorry it wouldn't stand up in court
