Plastering & Rendering

Paid a deposit almost 12 months ago and work not started

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.55 PM

Hi I paid a deposit last year so that the materials could be purchased. I appreciate that in a pandemic people want certainty and we'd used him for previous jobs so knew the quality of work. Since then I've had a serious of excuses about why the work couldn't start, including that some of the materials had gone out of date so needed to be repurchased (that was around February). He's now not responding to messages. During the pandemic I appreciate that being pinged or catching covid would alter schedules but I'm at a loss as to what to do next. Can I ask for the deposit back as each date that has been agreed has been missed? Many thanks

Of course you can ask for the deposit back, deposits are for incase you pull out not incase they pull out it doesn’t work like that

Unless materials have been ordered and delivered you should get your full deposit back. Anything you’ve received would still need paying for and any special order items are non refundable if already ordered. They can’t just take your money and disappear; that’s theft!

You should ask for your deposit back and they should if they are decent tradesmen, this shouldn't be an issue at all.

Never pay money up front. Alarm bells should ring if someone asks for money up front. Make stage payments by agreement with builder and yourself

I never used to take deposit But i do now as there are a few customers out there that don’t seem to release we’re running a business And cancelled the job the day before the jobs are due to start Even if you just cover the materials with deposit Seeing as it the builders not completing the work you are definitely due your deposit back
