Bricklaying & Repointing

Repointing entire house

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.41 PM

Hi My 30 year old house is made of a concrete brick type that is almost impossible to find matches for. As a few sections of the pointing are crumbly and holding moisture, I’ve decided to repoint the entire house rather than patch - even though most of the joints are in pretty good shape. About 12 bricks have hairline cracks right through, but a builder told me that as the house has now well settled, the cracked bricks won’t get any worse and will last as long as the rest of the house. These bricks are in sections where the pointing is good. I’m just wondering if an angle grinder could shatter the cracked bricks and give me another problem. Or should I just patch the bad bits, even though it would look like a patchwork? I’m very worried about this so any advice before I proceed would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

The angle grinder shouldn’t damage the bricks any further, however if it does then just replace them! About £15 per brick replacement.

Hi there I’d be able to assess more off a picture. But there’s nothing stopping you from carefully filling the cracks and do the repointing. If is only a small area there’s nothing to worry about. Hope this finds you well Kind Regards Alec

Hi I would remove the existing pointing to a depth of 20-25mm so that your new pointing is installed correctly and before the pointing is redone I would remove the existing cracked bricks and replace them to achieve a consistent colour match on the pointing itself otherwise if changed at a later date then you would most likely be able to see the difference where each brick has been changed Hope this helps with your project
