In one of our bedrooms that we are going to start redecorating we have a wall which was originally Lath & Plaster and has been boarded over with plasterboard and wallpapered. For many different reasons there is now a number of holes in the wall & a miss match of smaller pieces of plasterboard from various quick "fixes" (or so I think).
Is the best solution to remove the whole of the plasterboard & start again with a brand new plasterboard wall over the laths? It seems like the cleanest way to have a nice new finish before decorating the room, I'm just unsure how difficult/annoying it would be.
Thanks in advance for any answers
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?
Be careful when boarding straight over lath walls as they tend not to be straight. The holes you mentioned will be the screws being pulled through from the back.
In my opinion if you want a nice straight walls with no comebacks, you’d be better building a 2x2 partition in front of the wall. I’d not recommend removing the plaster as it tends to be roughly 25mm thick and the dust gets everywhere. It will require a small skip for a decent sized wall.
The problem is if you have ornate cornices in that room. You’ll struggle to find a match unless you go to a plaster reproduction company who can take moulds.
If you can find the studs behind the lath then it may be an option to go straight on to the plaster with the straps but no guarantee to straighten the wall that way and the old studs won’t be at 600mm centres.
Final option is you could try to “dot dab” the wall with either plasterboard adhesive or an adhesive foam. This takes a bit of skill and experience so not for a DIY’er I’d say.
Hope these options help

I would take it all down including the latte and plaster and start again as this will provide a clean Finish when it has been reboarded and plastered.
