Damp Proofing

What materials to use under gravel bed along the house wall please?

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.43 PM

My building survey indicated that my ground level is too high and there is only about 7cm to the DPC from ground, so I have dug out a trench 6 bricks down all the way to foundation. Now how to stack this trench the ensure best ventilation for the bricks please? Someone told me that best would be to put gravel only all the way down. Would it not be better to have some soil and then gravel on top please? Also I was thinking wether is a good idea to put wide damp proof course membrane between gravel and soil (graded so water goes away from the wall). I would really appreciate any advice on the matter please. My wife is nagging me already because I dug out a trench and now it is like that for few days and I dont have an idea what is the be solution to be applied there :)

you need trench approx 6 inches wide from the house wall, i50mm or two bricks below the damp proof course into earth this will allow water to soak away into the earth and not pool next to the house then put a weed suppressor membrane in on top of the earth and back fill with at least 20mm gravel not pea gravel, good luck Alex

You can put gravel down as it will stop the splash back of the water causing rising damp! You could also pack in with gravel & cement over with some sort or drainage, soil will keep hold of the water & continue to be damp! Also apply weather-shield sealed to the brick work, looks like glue but will dry as clear! Will act like water of a ducks back. Hope this helps?
