Best type of paint for newly plastered walls?
Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.43 PM
Hi! I would appreciate honest advice on what to use? Two weeks ago had my bedroom walls newly plastered and ready to paint. Which is best paint to use, read Matt, which type? And can I later cover it with Silk as prefer it as an end finish. It's also better to clean if walls get dirty. Thanks.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Buy any emulsion white paint ( cheap like Leyland trade briliant white) , water the paint down by 10% maybe slightly more because the new walls will absorb the water it will also make painting easier. Use this paint for the first coat and maybe second if needed after this paint will dry you can apply paint you want to have as a finish, most of the time with two covers ( dont water down this paint).

Water based White Matt Emulsion (Diluted with water, approx 10%). Apply evenly 1-2 coats. This allows the new plaster to breath and gives a good basecoat to apply your finishing coat/coats. For a solid looking finish, apply 2 coats of finishing colour. Only use Matt emulsion for your base coat as Silk will not allow the plaster to breath as it has a film on it when it dries, which makes it washable.

Use a white matt emulsion to make a mist coat - but you need to thin it down a bit more than has been suggested. Usually 4/6 water/paint will be sufficient. It will be messy and drip a lot but the water allows it to sink into the plaster and bond. One coat of that should be enough if you do it properly. Once that has dried properly you can use matt/eggshell/silk as your top coat and you will probably need at least two cpats depending on the colour. Do make sure your plaster is properly dry before you put anything on it. As long as it's dry, silk paint is ok. A durable matt might look nicer and is better for the wall but that's your choice. The important thing is a correctly thinned mist coat - if you don't add enough water it won't create a good bond and your top coats may flake off or blister.

All above answers are inaccurate.
Good you have asked the question.
Purchase the paint designed for the job. ' paint for new plaster' and follow the instructions printed on the tub regarding dilution levels rather that listen to the 'advice' given above and potentially ruin the job.
If in any doubt and as i always advocate here and elsewhere, locate a good independent decorators merchants and go and have a chat with them

I personally tend to use and recommend LEYLAND SUPER LEYTEX HIGH OPACITY MATT emulsion on newly plastered walls / ceilings. The first coat should be diluted, usually I tend to dilute at a ratio of 70% emulsion to 30% water. This is known technically as a "mist" coat. The mist coat gets absorbed into the new, very porous plaster and forms a good bond for all subsequent coats. If you are looking for a silk finish, I would advise 2 solid coats of your chosen colour in "matt" before a final coat in silk for best results. do NOT attempt to use silk on bare plaster.
