Suitable render for external sandstone window sill repair
Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.43 PM
I have a problem with one of my external sandstone window sills. The top smooth covering has worn completely away (approx size 1000mmLx100mm Sloping & vertical parts) and exposed the rough sandstone which I have cleaned with a algae cleaner.I hope to restore the smooth surface finish by applying a render/plaster compatible with sandstone and also with weather proof properties and your advice would be appreciated. Thanks

I personally will get a fine render mix going with (if possible) sandstone dust to mix in to get a nice accurate colour match to the existing, also if possible make a small bit of shuttering to form a shape to the render finish

Sandstone repairs should be done by a professional stone mason using a lithomex system which is a long lasting durable solution, although stone masonry is expensive it is completed to the highest of standards

Personally I would just replace the sill with a new one only because if it go's wrong your going to have to pay someone again. And when it gets cold and wet in winter months it might possibly leave you with same problem, but a suppose a good experienced stonemason will know whats best. I think in harsh weather conditions might start slowly falling back off if not done right or wrong mix
