LVT and chipboard/particleboard subfloor
Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.43 PM
Hi, I want fit luxury vinyl tiles (click system) on my floors in hallway, small toilet and kitchen. Subfloors are chipboards/particleboards (not sure which is correct term). Hallway has carpet, kitchen and toilet, sheet vinyl. Do I need to put a plywood, before laying underlay and LVT? I know it depends on the level/evenness of the boards. There is some movement on the floor in some spots, when stepped on it. I would appreciate on any advice. Thanks Thomas

Personally, I'd take the approach of stripping everything back to the chipboard. Assess the quality after a scrape and screw lose boards down. If required self level the entire area after priming the boards. You'll get a level throughout that way then install the LVT. Hope this helps.

There are two ways to proceed and one not to.
Not to: fit lvt onto the current boarding.
Option 1: use a fibre reinforced flexible smoothing compound over your existing floor.
Option 2: use a min 6mm FG1 flooring grade plyboard screwed down, approx 100 screws per board. Do not use builders yard plyboard if you want a long lasting floor.

Depending on the quality of the LVT I would be plywooding the full area. Check the spec sheets on the product, so you can claim a refund when/if it start breaking or coming up.
