Honed and polished Indian Sandstone (Raj green)
Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.43 PM
I have recently had a new patio laid using Raj Green honed and polished sandstone. It was placed on MOT1 and a 2inch cement base. I have just noticed that a few of the larger slabs (600mm x600mm) have stared to display a hair line crack on the surface. is this normal for a natural stone product or do I have a problem?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Yes you do. Probably means it's not been laid properly as sandstone is soft it needs support....... So Mot then full bed of concrete rather than concrete blobs as concrete tends to leave voids underneath if incorrectly done.

Yes you do have a problem the base has probably sunk. Was it compacted properly? It shouldn't be laid on sand 2 inches of concrete is what it should be laid on. If they have used resin pointing then you will have problems with it as the water will be underneath the slabs

mot and then cement is the correct way but they need to be played on a full bed of cement or they will be hollow underneath then they won't be fully supported and will crack when weight is put on them the 600x900 are going to be more prone because they cover a bigger span

i would say its been laid incorrectly or the mot was uneven prior to the mortar being laid for the sandstone to be laid in it should be laid on a cement and building sane mix at ratio of 5:1
