Plumber wants to charge for time spent fixing his own mishap

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.42 PM

Hi, We called a plumber out to investigate why there was no hot water in the house. He went into the attic and tinkered with something causing water to flow uncontrollable down the outside of the pipe down into the kitchen. He only realised water was flowing out and down into our kitchen when we noticed and informed him. He spent the next 3hrs cleaning up leak and figuring why the electric fuse was now tripping. It all got fixed in the end. We don’t mind paying for time spent fixing the original problem (no hot water). Should we be paying him the 3 additional hours spent cleaning and fixing his own mistake? We had no leak or fuse issue until the engineer came. Thank you for reading!

Hiya, This is a sticky situation as many tradesman have different rates and terms and conditions. however with that being said, if I had caused more damage I would not charge my customer for the time spent repairing my mistake. Hope this helps, Pristine Jets Ltd.

Absolutely not, the customer is not 'always right' (with all due respect) but I have never charged or even attempted to charge to put something right whether it was my plumber's fault - or not. Mistakes happen, of course they do but in the building industry customer satisfaction is everything even if that means eating into gross or nett profit. David G Parr interior[DESIGN]

Make sure you always read feedback although this can be fake sometimes & get a plumber who is qualified. Be careful not to hire a so called Jack of all trades who say they can do everything as I've cleaned up behind these cowboys before. A cheaper price is not always the way to go as it cost you more in the long run. As for paying for his extra time I personally wouldn't .

Firstly it sounds as if your ball valve in the tank was the cause for no hot water ,needed stripping down and lubricating.the plumber did not check the water level when shutting off ,this caused it to overflow downstairs, but it seems the overflow was not fitted correctly for water to get into the kitchen, new overflow needed.five minutes job not three hours .just pay the original quotation.
