Is it normal to have this many chips around a niche (Shower shelves) area?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.23 PM

Hi, We have had shelving fitted inside our shower enclosure and the tiles around all of the shelves have been chipped. The tiler attempted on 3 occasions to redo this at the cost of new tiles to myself... The tiles are made from Rectified Porcelain and expensive... the entire shelves (3x) from all sides has chips, and when questioned it was explained this is as good as it gets?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I would agree that a good tiler would be able to cut tiles using the correct cutting tools for the tile type either a wet diamond cut or scored type snap cut then finish with a smooth diamond hone or diamond file. It’s a basic skill. Especially for porcelain tiles. Best way to stop this is the score the tile with a carbide scribes and cut up to the scribed line to stop any chipping but still a good cutter should be able to achieve a good edge.

No it sounds like whoever fitted them used old cutting blades. Each material can require a certain cutter. If the wrong one or wrong speed of cutter the cuts get chipped.
