Orange peel/textured finish to mist coat
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.23 PM
Hi, I could do with some pointers. I had my walls replastered and they did a mist coat. The walls have an orange peel texture. Is this normal? Also there are brush marks in the mist coat. It’s mainly around the edges, sockets etc. If I sand this down it will be smooth unlike the rest of the wall. Any pointers on how to do this to get the best finish? I feel a bit disappointed by the finish as I’ve paid a professional to do this, should I or is this normal? Thanks

Hello,
Orange peel texture is a common thing in plastering, altho is not a professional finish. I would recommend preparing your wall before painting by sanding or washing it down with sugar soap to reach a smooth shiny finish, also when painting the wall add few coats of primer to set up the smooth surface for the final coats of your colour.

Orange peel effect is caused by rolling action (Texture of Roller sleeve). To allay this when using a roller, lay off gently with a brush.

It sounds to me as though the painter didn't thin the paint enough for a mist coat. A mist coat should be pretty flat because it's not thick enough to produce any texture. The only way to rectify it is to sand it all down.
