Musty smell in listed building ground floor
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.23 PM
We purchased a ground floor apartment in a listed building in 2017. The surveyor told us there was wet rot which eas causing musty smell we got this all replaced, replaced electric heating with gas, new flooring in all rooms and completely redecorated. The musty smell is still here! We have had a dehumidifier and air purifier running for the past year and still have musty smelling clothes etc, I’m now thinking maybe we need air vents for outside leading to under the floors? Would this help? Any advice appreciated

without actually looking at the property its impossible to say exactly what is causing your issues, ventilation under the floor only helps if its a suspended wooden floor & should have been installed at the time the floor was replaced if it was required, the main thing here seems to be why was there wet rot as replacing things without actually solving the cause will only result in it re occurring which may very well be what is happening.your best bet would be to get a specialist who understands older buildings & the materials used to construct them in to have a look for the solution.
good luck Alex

Right This Should have Been the Procedure
1) Clear the old wood Flooring
2) The Spray empty floor Area with woodworm Killer
3) Drill out the internals wall be very careful as it could be single Brick
4) Install air vents as required
5) Install 5x4 tantalized supporting timbers with noggins
6) Install the new flooring
I hope this Helps you
