Repairs to driveway with main sewers beneath

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.23 PM

Hi ..... Our semi-detached house has the main sewer line from several houses running down beneath our 60ft driveway. A couple of years ago United Utilities came out to repair a couple of the manhole covers due to cracking around the edges & didn't charge us as the deeds state they're responsible for maintenance. However, the bottom end of the driveway is clearly collapsing, the manhole edges have gone again & we're not sure if this is because the sewer beneath is damaged or our driveway just needs replacing. I don't want to go digging up the driveway & risk damaging the sewer further if it is that which is causing the problem. If it the sewer that is causing the problem, who is responsible for the repairs ?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi I don't think the sinking of the driveway would be anything to do with a collapsed sewer other wise there would be problems with waste backing up in the system and this would quickly be repaired urgently if there was a problem. It sounds like to me that your drive is sinking due to age and subbase failure and would probably be better if it was replaced. If the manhole covers are the care of United utilities I would probably call them and tell them the work they have done has failed and need repairing again. I hope this helps..

I would get united utilities out to put a camera along the pipe to see if the pipe has given way, if it's not then there could be another void that has opened up over the years, which is why the drive is sinking

Hi, all work within 3m above and around the sewer needs approval from United utility. They would be you first port of call. They would organise a survey to assess damages and if any issue with their sewer caused damage to your property they are responsible for putting right. Hope this helps, Callum.
