Plumbing

Cold water pressure low but only in the kitchen

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.39 PM

UPDATE: sorted in the mean time, it had nothing to do with plumbing after all. Today we turned the cold water off from the mains under the sink in order to fit a water heater. Upon turning it back on, the pressure in the kitchen is very low. The pressure in the bathroom upstairs however is fine, as well as the pressure for the hot water tap (including the one in the kitchen, ironically). I spent half an hour inspecting everything and turning them on/off (previous plumber left and he's not local). I couldn't figure it out though. I also see a strange setup with two pipes coming out of the ground connected to cold water (or supplying cold water). So I was wondering if anyone has any clue about what is going on. The piping, has two water pipes coming from the ground and both connected, but only one has a mains tap: Thanks in advance.

Without knowing the rest of the house supply its a bit of a guess, but my thoughts are that you have a cold water storage tank that supplies the rest of the house, and the mains stop tap may have jammed a little. Reducing the flow to tour kitchen tap. The rest of the house seems fine as the tank will take a long time to run out, and is still being supplied by a lower flow mains. The other thought is that you have dislodged some sediment or minerals when the stop tap was reopened which may have clogged the aerator on your kitchen tap. It's an easy problem fix for a qualified plumber. Even though the plumber wasn't local, you should call him back. It's best practice to ensure the system is back to normal working conditions before leaving site.

Hi yes you will probably find that the stopcock jumper/washer has stuck inside the stopcock or that the stopcock has not been re-opened fully.

Lol ok… So you have now resolved your cold mains water pressure issue to the kitchen sink and it wasn’t a plumbing problem after all!!! Incidentally was it the isolator that’s above the stop tap that wasn’t turned on fully? Would be good to know the answer!

Customer said pressure is fine on the kitchen tap for the hot therefore it can’t be the aerator. Does the homeowner have a combination boiler? Unvented cylinder? More information needed before attempting to diagnose the problem.
