Old gas and electric pipes and cables

My celler has 2 old electricity mains cables and an old gas pipe in it is there any way to check if they are still active or if they are old and can be removed. Would I need to ca out the utilities or would a local 'expert' be able to help

You can check the cable is live with a voltage tested and for the gas pipe you have to follow where the pipe go's if its still connected to the mains or call a gas engineer round to check and maybe remove

Voltage tester may not show the cable is live even though it could still be live, an armoured cable would be live yet not show on a pen voltage tester as its too thick. Get a professional to confirm, probably your main incoming gas and electric to your house.
