Loud rattling banging noise from new dormer

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.55 PM

We’ve just had a new dormer put on our house a few months ago, and when it’s really windy, it makes lots of noise on the right hand side, banging rattling noises which keep us all awake, even on the floor below. Is this normal? Our builders say it is normal!!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

It’s certainly not normal. No one could be 100% certain what problem is without taking a proper look. But sounds like something is loosely fixed. Tile hanging, fascia board or down pipe maybe. But no not normal.

Hi, It could be as simple as the fascias wobbling in the high wind. If you can open the dormer window and try and wobble the fascias to see if the noise comes back. If it does, the fascias fixings just need strengthening. Thanks Jon

Is your new Dorma cladded? Or maybe tile hung in the outside? There’s a chance they haven’t fixed correctly so something is loose and banging with the wind. Hard to help without looking but that’s why my guess would be. Hope this helps.
