Upstairs lighting not isolated by any MCB in the consumer unit

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.01 PM

Hello, My daughter has just moved into a house and asked me to fit a new, fancy light fitting in the main bedroom. However, I discovered that none of the MCBs in the consumer unit turn the power off to that bedroom (and one other), despite there being two MCBs that are marked as being for 'Upstairs lighting'! Is it likely that one of the MCBs has failed (and so won't trip off)? Or is there another likely cause for the problem? Many thanks for any suggestions.

Have you tried turning off the main switch on the fuse board? See if this disconnects the supply. If it doesn't then there could be a smaller sub fuse board tucked away somewhere. If neither of these things help then you'll need to get an electrician in!

Sounds to me that the most likely reason is that two or more lighting circuits have been combined? Try tripping the circuits individually until you identify the offending circuit. At that point consult an electrician. Regards Neil

Are they fed off of a Spur unit from a power supply?
