Closing gap between timber beams and timber cladding boards

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.01 PM

My house was built in the 1890's with a traditional timber frame. In one of the bedrooms the timber rafters and purlins are visible on the inside and sticking out. In-between those the wall is covered by newly installed tongue & groove timber cladding boards. There are now gaps between the rafters/purlins and the cladding boards which I'd like to cover somehow. The gaps are irregular and between a quarter of an inch and one inch wide. Are there any flexible materials you could recommend to mask the gap? Thanks!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

You could use decorater’s caulk but may find the wider gaps difficult to fill using this. The other way is to scribe trimming pieces to cover the uneven gaps

your gaps need to be covered with something very flexy, still I will not use any caulk ( may be as a finish ) but not to cover an inch gaps. unfortunately whoever install your t&g on the walls did should fix those gaps in a first place. Now i will suggest to fill all gaps with small/ sensible amount of expanding foam, wait a day for foam to dry completely, cut foam with Stanley knife, fill all expanding foam areas with wood filler, sand all back nicely, use caulk only on the edge between purling/rafter and wall and finish with paint. will be time consuming but that what i suggest

Possibly a quadrant beading or scotia beading may do the trick.

You must create a border in timber around the cladding to cover the gaps. Scribed if necessary.
