Tarmac drive, stones lifting in heat - faulty?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.00 PM

When our drive was installed in September 2020 we were not particularly happy with it; it sunk in one place and the finish looked "open" and "rocky". Since April every time there is sun parts of it go a bit soft and stones come loose, with sticky tar on them. I'm trying to attach a picture but not sure how to do so? My wife wonders if this is normal and just a feature of first summer, like surface stones coming loose. I'm concerned there's something wrong with the installation and it will wear really quickly. I would have thought that tarmac might go soft in summer but damage (if any) would be superficial - scuff marks or point load damage, rather than stones coming loose? Does anyone have any views on this please?

Did you let the area that was renewed dry ? Ideally it needs 3-5 days depending on the material used. It is important to do that (especially if you’re using a thick layer) as the tarmac used for driveways is not the same quality to what road surfacing contractors are using. Also note that in summer, the heat from the sun can cause the tarmac surface to soften, this causing to further damage from anything that’s heavy. Try to apply tarmac restorer, it will keep your drive protected and create a tough layer on top of the existing surface. Last bit of advice: get your hose out on hot summer days and apply cold water at low pressure, that will harden the soft surface and clean the tarmac in the same time 👌🏽 Hope it helps

Yes its been laid faulty if its sank and has stones coming loose, you can get loose stones (very few if any on point of contact turning ie power steering in one place), tarmac does not take 3-5 days to dry and materials used from the tarmac plant are all to road specifications and are ce certified product The driveway restorer may help to seal the driveway to prevent further damage or you could use micro asphalt or use another wearing course like Resin Bound/Bond.

You need to get the contractor back and show them what’s happening
