What depth should a concrete screed be on a raised patio prior to porcelain tiles

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.00 PM

We have a raised patio 5.9m x 4.7m with brick walls on the outside, and we have backfilled with rubble and today brought the level up with scalpings to approximately 2courses of bricks below damp course. We are going to attempt to use a wakker plate, but surely this will take the level Down further.? We now need to have it screened with sand and cement, prior to having Porcelain tiles fitted. Have we backfilled enough? Is this level correct? We are a retired couple but decided to do the heavy work of backfilling ourselves but will leave the screening and tiling to the experts. Please can someone advise !! Have we done this right?? Thank you.

1) please use a wacker plate! 2) wack depths of 100mm at a time. 3) In between depths water and wack a 2nd time. 4) the concrete should be 125mm and no less! 5) the finish height should be lower than 100mm below damp course. Also leave a 100mm void between the concrete and the house! Remember that with a solid base your need to take extra care in drainage.

Using a whacker plate is definitely recommended, at least 150mm of hard-core, then 100mm of type1/ scalping, then blinded of with 50mm sand, each layer compacted with the whacker plate separately, then the slab layers will lay 100mm of sharp sand and cement screed at the same time as laying the slabs, recommended total finish height of slabs is 150mm below damp, if your higher then a drainage strip of 100mm abutting the house is required.
