Roof level of my extension
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.41 PM
I would like to extend my flat to the back and would like to push the ceiling as high as possible. Can the upstand of my 'flat roof' be above the floor joist of the flat above? We are exploring the possibility of this idea for now, we would be needing planning permission for sure
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

1. Flats unless in freehold possession usually by default require planning
2. You can agree with your neighbour above via Structural Party Wall notice or
agreement details with regards to roof height.
3. For this scenario (subject to extension depth) Roof design I would envisage -
two options
a) crown roof or flat roof
b) flat roof
Good Luck..

The scenario you describe is quite normal and happen for example anytime you do a side or rear extension for ground floor flat with a pitch roof.
Party wall and license to alter will be required.
Thanks

Keep it simple. The key is the Party wall Agreement . With a letter of express consent from your neighbour you can do whatever you want as long so your neighbour gives the express consent for that whatever.
You can pay them for it if you want. Talk o your party wall surveyor about the details.
