Bathroom Fitting

Upstairs toilet

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.40 PM

Hello, we have a large upstairs landing which we would like to make into a small corner room to house a toilet and sink. Is this possible and is it a big job. Would we need planning permission. Thank you.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Shouldn't need planning permission as long as your not changing anything structurally. Normally you just need to be able to tee into a soil pipe outside. If you can't do this then a saniflo would suffice

Depends if you’re in England or Scotland. Not sure about English planning law, however in Scotland if you need to break into the underground drainage for the soil pipe you might need a Building Warrant with a drain test done when complete. If you can connect to the existing soil or use a SANIFLO you should be OK. There’s also a possibility you’d need a change of space and a plan drawn up though for Building Warrant most council planning depts. are ok with a basic drawing.

Strictly speaking, such a job should be covered with an application to Building Control. You can do this online: estimate the price for the work at five thousand and pay the fee. I can't say that I've ever seen that happen though! Most people would choose someone they believe to be competent and get on with it.
