Tiling
very large porcelian tiles on wooden floor boards
Anonymous user 23 February 2024 - 2.41 PM
My tiler put down porcelian tiles on some (very expensive matting) one of the tiles cracked and the grouting is coming out everywhere - the tiler came to replace the cracked tile and grout - but when he pulled up the broken tile the other tile came with it - the matting had not stuck to the floor boards and the tile came away with no adhesive on it at all, infact the floor looked like it had just got dust on it - well anyway - would the tiler be covered by his insurance for this? the complete floor with matting, tiles and tiler came to £3000 and now i have a hole in my tiled kitchen where the two tiles once were - (keep stubbing toe on edge!!!!!) and was told that couldn't have tiles again?
Please can you advise me on this.
Kind regards
fed up

There are quite a few new advances for tiling over timber surfaces but are very costly, being in this trade for 25 years still the best way is to overboard and use top quality adhesives and grout. Years of trouble free life in your new floor

always put plywood over floorboards before tiling and use top quality adhesive, i dont think this will be covered by insurance, he should however put his faults right

Theres a few things that could be wrong, the joists are to far apart so would need noggins in to strengthen the floor. The matting is only designed for laterall movement not deflection. Or he hasnt screwed the floor boards first to joists, also hasnt primed floor boards first. Lastly it sounds like he has mixed adhesive to dry or spread to much so it has skinned (meaning the top layer of adhesive has dryed through air or heat temp). Before tiles were put down. It is hes problem and hes pubic liability should cover this.
Good luck, I hope Ive helped in some way or another.
