What is the best way to level an old asbestos-containing bitumen floors for carpet installation

Hi, I have just bought a property in which the vinyl tiles and bitumen underneath contain asbestos. The asbestos specialist recommended that I should have the vinyl tiles removed while leaving the bitumen behind due to cost considerations. I would like to install carpet in the property, but before that I need to level the bitumen floor as there could be some damage to the bitumen when the vinyl tiles are removed. What is the best way to level the flooring? (wood? Levelling compound? or other methods?) Are there any other considerations that need to be taken into account (e.g. damp)? Thanks in advance.

Depending on how loose the vinyl tiles are, if they are well stuck there are smoothing compound you can use to incapsulate the tiles. This means you wouldn’t have to take the tiles up and would be left with a smooth floor. Alternatively you could up lift them (use a professional company) then once again use an appropriate smoothing compound to go over the bitumen.

I would use arditex NA levelling compound. It doesn't need a primer over bitumen.

Have the tiles removed. Scrape and clean as much of the sub floor as possible, removing any loose particles. Then self level with Ardex Arditex NA. Max depth 10mm. Good luck

Because in your question you said there could be some concerns about damp in the flooring so I would recommend getting a specialist in to remove all the asbestos bitumen flooring relay new flooring ply Or tongue and groove chipboard flooring treated make sure there is ventilation under the floor as this is the main cause of dry rot in your Joyce I hope this helps
