Is there a way to prevent frozen pipes from bursting?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.22 PM

Hi folks, I have a timber shed with a small amount of copper pipe plumbing and having put the water on for the first time this year I have found three pipes that have burst. The pipes are lagged but with the weather being so bad I have only this last couple of days turned the water on having turned it off before the weather hit. The system was not drained, which was a simple forgetful issue and easily rectified next year when I tattoo a note on my forehead to drain the system as well as turn the water off. I was wondering if there might be something like a pressure valve or something similar that might help to prevent so things or if one could be invented to protect against this from happening again in the future? If there is something on the market that will do this already, can you point me at it and if not, can someone invent one please..!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Easiest option would be to invest in some thicker pipe insulation , if you already have done so then you could box the pipes in and fill the boxing with rock wool insulation as well as the lagging. A more costly way would be to install something called trace heating - this is an electrical element that is installed inline of copper pipe work or is some cases a small cable that wraps around the copper pipe - what this cable does is remains at a temperature that’s about freezing and keeps the pipe at that same temperature , i believe it is wired into the mains and is very effective Here is a link of the trace heating https://www.ezeheat.co.uk/?gclid=CjwKCAjw47eFBhA9EiwAy8kzNJrvQH3pOV0cXQHCgeJRAOXrt_usd9j1hyOtljLI_L49l2e5bJlLdxoCYRsQAvD_BwE
