0.75mm or 1.5mm for a wall mounted LED light with Inline Cord Switch?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.22 PM

Hi, I hope everyone is doing well and is staying safe! I'm installing a new wall light that terminated into a 3amp fused plug; the plug sockets are RCD protected, which will save on creating a chase (less cleaning, yay!) Originally I planned to use twin & earth 1.5mm cable. However, because the light itself has no button (on/off switch), I would need to supply one and because the plug sockets are too low down to keep turning off and on etc. I thought about adding an Inline Cord Switch (6A 230V, 50Hz) to solve this issue. It seems I have everything sorted here, but why am I asking this question? To save cost and hassle (as I don't have either a 1.5m cable or an Inline Cord Switch on hand and it has a plug on the end, I know they are cheap to get), could I use a cable from a lamp? They have an Inline Cord Switch attached, a plug, and it would be a simple wago job. But would this be okay to carry the current? The light: Voltage: 110-240V Using an E27 LED 4W bulb (I may change this to higher watts) Double insulated The Lamp cable: 3A 250v ~ plug 2@2/250 ~ (I can't see anything about amp on it) Inline Cord Switch 2x0.75mm2 cable (as seen on the cable) Thank you! tl;dr: Can I use lamp cable "2x0.75mm2" with the Inline Cord Switch "2@2/250" on a 3amp plug to power a double insulated wall light that is running E27 LED 4W bulb (I may change to higher watts).

In my knowledge It's better to fit the 1.5 mm cable to protect the cable from any damage from any overload. Hope this will help

a watt light will draw .02 amperes a .75mm2 cable can carry over 3 amps if buried in all and at max tempterature. so you are covered. its likely your sockets are protected by rcd at the consumer unit. its a good idea to check
