Gas Works

Metal pipes sticking up from floor boards next to fireplace.

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.22 PM

Hi all, I have some metal pipes in the house (1930s) which sticks up from underneath the wooden floor boards next to a chimney breast fire place. I think these are old gas pipes. They do not connect anywhere and I do not think I will have any use of them in the near future. Before laying new flooring, i want to cut these pipes short and cap them off underneath the floorboards so the flooring can be flush (with no pipe sticking up). What do people usually do with these old pipes before laying floor? Thank you

You should have a gas engineer round to check they're disabled correctly

Usually you would have a gas engineer attend and confirm the pipes are not still live. If you cut them and they're live you will have a problem. Once confirmed they could cap them in the floor space.

Make sure there not connected with gas line then you can unscrew them and put a blank ending cap on it

You will need the services of a gas engineer to perform initial let by and tightness tests, cut the pipes back below floor level and then cap them off with a suitable (non compression) fitting. He will then need to re-test for leaks before re-seating any floorboards and then purging and re-commissioning your gas pipework to any other appliances.
