Is it possible to unblock a rainwater soakaway?
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.38 PM
We have a blocked rainwater soakaway (with impacted moss and other natural debris - we've taken a look as it was also coming up the drainpipe). Is it possible to unblock this or is our only option to build a new one? I have had conflicted advice.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi Emma,
If you could locate where the RW soakaway terminates (presumably within your garden), it might be possible to expose this point and rod the down pipe from where you're noticing the blockage. This should then clear the run of pipe but you'll have to collect the sludge at the other end! I wouldn't recommend rodding any debris without locating the point of termination however, as you could just end up clogging further down the line or potentially worsen the situation through compaction of the debris.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Sean

Depending on it being built/installed properly and the materials used ie shingle, rubble, brick or crates there is one way u can almost guarantee will stop it blocking. This is simply by going that extra bit money/work instal a silt trap before the soakaway. This will 100 percent stop anything going in the soakaway providing it’s emptied once a month or more depending on rain. The answers differ as it would only be the pipe blocked if it was a shingle soakaway and so on but to unblock is not impossible. The way forward is the silt trap STOP it from blocking in the first place.
