How can I check if bathroom soil pipe is venting externally?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.38 PM

There is a vent in the roof above the upstairs bathroom, but I want to check that it is actually properly connected to the soil pipe. There is an odour in the bathroom. Is there a way to check without pulling away walls?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If there is an odour in the bathroom already you have a leak or a gap in the soil pipe (or another source), the vent won't impact in this as the water trap in the toilet and the u bends seals the soil pipe from the bathroom. Try accessing as much as the pipework as you can. It is worth checking the u bends on the sink/bath/shower as they gum up and smell over time too.

Check for any signs of seepage around all visible joins a blockage over time can cause smells.
