Is my wood mouldy or discoloured?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.38 PM

I have a pair of flat-packed planters made of pressure-treated timber. I have some clear Cuprinol I want to paint them with for extra protection. The instructions were very clear that I was not to use it if I found any mould, I should clean that off first. After painting a few sheets I noticed these pale green spots on some of the wood and I remembered that I had left them outside for a while, they were in plastic wrapping and under a porch roof but there the wrapping had a lot of condensation on the inside. I found some sandpaper and tried to get rid of it but it wouldn't come off. Then I thought maybe the wood is just discoloured. Which is it?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hello sir, In my experience sleepers tend to suffer from spotting, it could be mould, the start of moss or even sometimes the manufacturers treat them with a green stain so could be splash on a non treated sleeper (yours). Either way... sand it down course grit first then move into finer paper, wipe them free of dust ensuring the spotting has gone, and treat the sleepers as soon as possible with a good quality stain or sealant and treat every couple of years depending on location and moisture. Sleepers are almost bulletproof to the elements especially treated. Hope this helps Everpool Ltd
