Rhythmic banging in pipes/radiators at random points in the day

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.00 PM

Hi, We had a radiator removed in the front room which has been capped off along with some other plumbing work (pipes relocated under floor boards in front room and installation of a towel rail) and are waiting for the new radiator to be reinstalled post decorating. I'm fairly sure the sounds have started since this visit a few months ago so could be linked. At various points in the day our heating system has a rhythmic clunking sound in the pipes/radiators. You hear a dull click/thud in the airing cupboard then a few seconds later a much louder sound in all the radiators/pipes over the building. It last for 5 - 10 mins then stops and seems to occur randomly - for example, it's just done it now and the heating/water isn't on and there have been no taps or toilets being flushed. Any ideas? Would air in the system cause a regular rhythmic sound like this?

Yes you may well have an air lock in the system.

Sounds like air circulating around the system. If you vent the rads frequently it will eventually stop. Failing that, drain down the system, open the port valves and get rid of every last drop of water. Then slowly refill the system again
