Over painting lining paper

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.00 PM

Due to grubby grandsons fingerprints I tried to wash them off carefully with warm water, BUT all it did was make a dark grey mess. So, I got the original Crown Sail White Matt paint in order to smarten it back to the original. The exact same condition occurred where all I’ve done is make a larger grey cloud ! The lining paper has only been up about 3 years in a normal lounge room with no adverse conditions. Short of buying a much darker paint colour and make a feature wall, what can I do and has anyone else experienced this phenomenon ? Thanks all for your time and valuable suggestions particularly our friend from Dundee. However the mystery deepens as I’ve tried several suggestions with no positive outcome. Firstly the Crown paint is Matt. I tried PlastiKote as a stain sealer. I’ve overpainted in the original colour twice. I still get this grey patchy affect particularly around the perimeter. I’ve even now tried a test area away from the original but have the same affect. Would anyone agree it may be down to the lining paper having been up a few years ? It’s a north facing wall with little sunlight, no smokers in the house. Btw the lining paper was medium grade and has worked well elsewhere in the bungalow.

Hi there, Firstly what did you clean the area with warm water and some sort of cleaning products?. If yes then this is best advice I can give you to correct this situation! Firstly marked area from cleaning marks off treat this area with an aerosol can called Bin Zinnersar stain block apply this to affected area then leave to dry. Once stain block has dried apply your Emulsion to affected area once dry unfortunately you will have to repaint entire wall to achieve a uniformed finish also once you’ve done this don’t stress if area you’ve treated is still visible this May occur due to affected area being treated with stain block and should dry back fine!. Also final wee bit of advice in future if you plan to redecorate any further rooms in your property with grandkids in mind I’d advise you use a Durable Matt Emulsion or Diamond Eggshell this product is wipe able and will save you having to repaint entire wall. Hi Again, Just picked up your update in regards to your situation. I have a few possible answers to further work you’ve carried out in wall. Firstly plastikote is a sealant but unfortunately after reading there specifications online it’s not the correct product to resolve area you’ve cleaned on wall. Plastikote will not adhere to any Vinyl area this could possibly be why further patches are reappearing Crown Paint you have, first question is this paint you have in your possession been left over from when original work was carried out?. If so has it been stored away for a while as my thoughts are it may have gone off, also prior to using on walls did you stir paint up prior to paint?. Wallpaper the area you cleaned did you give it sufficient time to dry out correctly as if it’s been over cleaned May possibly be build up of moisture under existing wallpaper. Hope this helps

Unfortunately, the top layer of paper was damaged. You can try to use easy FILLER here and then paint it.

a few questions first? have you just painted the area where the marks were? Yes! If using the same (original paint from last application)Try painting the whole of that wall again, not just the patch. If the area has been damaged use some fine sandpaper to lightly remove any bits and use some original paint watered down to give the area a light mist coat then when dry paint whole wall area to edges with original paint. Remember to make sure when using stored paint, read in structions first and stir paint if required.
