Oven keeps tripping after new RCBOs fitted to fuse box.

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.00 PM

I had an electrican do an EICR report and fit couple of new RCBOs to fuse box with the rest of the circuits being under RCD control. EICR report was a pass. However the tenant notified me that the fuse box now kept on tripping as soon as the oven is switched on. This problem only happened after the electrician carried out the minor works and was working without issues previously. I contacted the electrician who carried out the work but he was firstly adamant the old oven was to blame and needed replacing. I pointed out the oven was less than 6 months old and a Brand name. He then suggested it might be the circuit which I would have thought would have been indentified from the checks he performed. I get the impression he is reluctant to return or to take ownership. Any advice would be appreciated.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

It could indeed be a faulty oven. Ovens run quite happily on non-RCD circuits if they have an earth to neutral fault. Installing a 30mA RCD on it will immediately trip if it is faulty. Whether it is 6 months old or 6 years old is immaterial. New ovens can and do have faults. I have had experience of it. The retailers always blame the sparky first before they send out their appliance repairer. I would suggest you get your oven looked at under warranty before getting angry with the electrician.

Be interested to know if the cooker circuit was RCBO/RCD protected before. As you don’t state which circuits the RCBO’s were connected to, sounds like he might have connected the neutral in the wrong neutral bar ( done it myself ) if it is indeed the cooker, or the circuit cable itself, it is a simple operation to diagnose with the right test equipment. Just bear in mind that there other electricians out there if this one doesn’t return.

Although I agree with what the electrician has said, it would be common courtesy to call back and investigate the problem as there could be several other reasons why the rcbo is tripping. I have had faulty rcbos straight out of the box. So in my opinion it would be advisable to actually investigate the problem rather than assuming it is a faulty oven .

From the information provided on this oven issues. The easy way to say Oven is faulty or got some issues with E- N fault But if the oven is relatively new under 6 month than majority issues may be with some connection issues/ switch/ isolator or some time appliance been recently cleaned ! but not reported as tenant may get blame !! There are many issues ! You can higher someone to check appliances and circuit alone to find where the fault is ? Some good electrician or company who cares about their client and reputation provide free re visit for the fuse board and their tested circuits to re check and advise you further repairing cost for the old wiring. Remember replacing fuse board will not extend life of the wiring but save life of the humans or animals. I hope the above is helpful.
