Ceiling rose rewiring issue

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.00 PM

I just changed the ceiling rose and pull switch in the bathroom. I took a picture of the wiring in the rose before doing, put it back what I thought was the same in the new one (3 red live in middle block of 3 LOOP, 2 black neutral in N bank of 3 where the other hole is used for the lamp itself, and 1 black neutral in the L bank of 3, where another hole is used for the other wire to the lamp). Seems to align to online diagrams etc. It works but the light in the hallway no longer does. I’ve tried bulbs that definitely work and nothing. I thought maybe I got the neutrals mixed up and tried all 3 positions where the 1 neutral is not in the same block as the others. There is 1 position which works. 1 which doesn’t and 1 which kills the bulb! Neither make the light in the hallway work. I’ve changed nothing to that light. The pull switch I tried changing black and red around for the sake of it and as expected made no difference. I’m beginning to think a rat has eaten a cable or I’ve screwed through a cable when putting the rose in! The only other change I made was changing the pull string in the other bathroom. Very easy switch, only a black and red. Any ideas much appreciated!

I suspect you've mixed up the neutrals with the switch line (Easily done). The issue you have now is that you need to identify which of those black neutral cables in the ceiling rose goes back to the pullcord, and which ones should be grouped with the rest. You can do this through a process of elimination or through testing to find which cable is which, or identify a possible fault somewhere. Save your self the headache and get an electrician round to have a proper look. Good luck!

The main problem here is that you haven’t called an electrician.

I think he might first need to establish the wires that is going to that light if he hasn’t done so as yet . Cause it sounds like they used that pull switch as a JB from where feed is coming from that might be going to a switch then the light 💡.
