Ceiling light connector block exposed

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.00 PM

I hired a highly rated electrician through this site to fit a ceiling light. The ceiling rose’s original connector strip was removed from its housing and is now exposed in the ceiling void. From what I understand, this is incorrect and it needs to be housed. Is it ‘normal’ for people to put exposed connector blocks on the ceiling void? I’m now a little worried about the safety of my house. Best, Chris ============= Update. Thanks for your advice, very much appreciated! The wiring connections are now safely housed in wago connectors instead of an unhoused old connector block in the ceiling void.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi, if they have left the original metal connection strip exposed without its plastic shroud has the potential to be very dangerous if it is the live connections and needs rectifying immediately as it has exposed conductive parts, the way it should have been done is in insulated connector blocks or using a junction box, it isn’t as dangerous if it is the earth connections but theses should also be in insulated connector or junction box.

Any electrical connection should be contained within a suitable enclosure. This can be the base of a light fitting or a junction box above the light fitting located in the ceiling void. Anything less is unacceptable.

It is not compliant with BS7671 even if the connectors are insulated. They need to be in a housing with a chord grip around the conductors. So the junction box that form the housing must also have a cord grip
