Paint on silk emusion and on wallpaper

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.00 PM

Hi I am planning to change the paint throught out the house, my questions are: 1- the hallway has silk emusion, to change to matt do I have to do a quick sand down or can I paint straight on to it(i am changing colour, looking for best results)? If needs to sand down what grade sand paper, this walls are renovated so fairly new. 2- the rooms have old walpapper which are painted over with silk(i believe as it has some glow), to paint matt over it do I need to use any other products first as primer or walpapper coverup? 3-there are some small areas of unpained walpapper, before painting matt over it, what cover i have to use, do i need to do anything at the wall paper joints to make sure it does not show after painting?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I would use 80 grit sandpaper and paint straight on it unless there are holes or cracks to fill

150 griit, possibly 120 but definitely no lower than that, you would see the sanding marks after painting if you did. I always wash silk painted walls and ceilings with sugar soap then clean water. Regarding paint. As i always advocate here. Locate a good independent decorators merchant and go and have a chat with them

I have just completed a job like this in Barnsley, as long as you give the walls a good sand 80-120 grit to take the shine away from the silk you will find 2 coats of Matt over the top will give you a great finish, make sure you prep any holes or cracks before you paint over it in Matt

I would fill the holes and defects and sand flat with 120 sandpaper 80 is too abrasive

I would use 80 sandpaper followed by 120 and 240. Than i would paint unless there are some biger holes in the wall. If so i would use filler and sanding afterwords or if the walls are in bad condition i would plaster, create nise smooth surfaces and than paint.

No need to sand down. Directly paint mat emulsion to existing paint

Sanding is an option, but very time-consuming. In the hall, just use a good quality water-based primer, no sanding needed..can be painted directly onto the silk after a good clean. When dry, topcoat it with your mat emulsion...Re: the rooms with wallpaper. As a pro, I would strip the room of paper completely prep & paint...If you don't want to strip the paper, make sure you seal it first with a sealing product like Zinsser 123 bull's eye..this will also be enough to fill the joints in the paper..But if you want it to be perfect, better to strip back and prep properly before painting.
