Fencing

Concrete Post Depth

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.40 PM

Hi all, I’m installing 4’ overlap fence panels x10 with a 2’ trellis on top and 6” gravel boards. Will I get away with 18” hole depth for my concrete posts as 2’ of the fence will only be trellis? (I’m using 8’ posts) Thanks in advance.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hello. Depends on the ground. If its firm and well compacted, 2' is good otherwise you may wish to go deeper. I also build-as-I-go with concrete and panels. You can push the posts up to the panels to get a snug fit and avoid needing to use chocks (nothing worse than a panel rattling in the wind!) or have problems later if you've miscalculated somewhere. All the best Dan

Hi I would personally use 9ft posts When I’m doing a 6ft fence plus 6” gravel I always go 2ft into the ground Any thing higher then I use longer posts to get more into the ground

I read the question as about hole depth not weather the panels would rattle, weather I install 6ft or 4ft panels I always recommend putting the post 2ft in the ground and that's how I've always done it. Thanks Ian
