Expanding foam around the top of an external door?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.40 PM

Hi, we just had a new front door fitted. There was a draft coming through the top and i suspected they hadn't filled the gap with foam. At first the installer said they must have, but when i asked them to remove the plastic covering, sure enough just a gap. Now they want to come back and fill the gap with silicone. My question is, should i insist that they use expanding foam as surely silicone won't be insulating? He said expanding foam might be messy and not needed for a small gap. The gap is about half an inch. He is coming back later, so a quick response is hugely appreciated! <UPDATE: he came back and must have decided for himself to use foam, so i didnt have to argue the case. Thank you Welsh&Hunter for your quick reply, that was v helpful>

A little bead of foam would be fine but depending on how much space above door for foam to expand is as it could possibly push the the header of door frame down and cause the door to catch when opening and shutting

Just remember just foaming it may not create a tight seal I recommend having silicone run the bead to avoid a draught and for it to be water tight the foam just helps hold it tight and fill the gap youve got fixings to hold the door tight so no need for foam really

You have to use expanding foam where it says lowpressure or something similar. Next your door frame or window will be in the same position and nothing happen at all.
