Can I connect a washing machine to a boiler?
Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.42 PM
My washing machine is currently in the kitchen, and I want to move it to the utility cupboard to free up space in the kitchen. The utility cupboard is quite spacious and currently houses the boiler. I understand the washing machine needs to be connected to the cold water(?), but is it possible to connect it to the boiler to access water? I've seen it done in my old place, but not sure if that's because of anything special. Edit: as it’s popped up - it’s a combi boiler (ecotec valiant). No water tank involved.

It's not a problem if you attach your washing machine to a boiler cold warer supply . You need just to fit , below to existing boiler feed cold water valve , a tee with a washing machine valve . You need just to check befoŕe that if you have already there ( except boiler discharge pipe ) or if you can run a waste pipe to connect the washing machine drain ,

Yes, you can.
Anyway, you would be affected by the suddenly dropped water pressure when at the same time you'll take the shover and the washing machine would be in use while the cold water supply is 15mm pipe without water tank or cistern. To avoid that it is some additional work to be done, upgrading a bit.
The second issue that may come would be the electrical supply. If you have got the water cylinder/cistern with an electrical heater then you can not connect the washing machine to the same circuit because the CB is already 16 or 20 A which is at their limit. You'll need an additional circuit or a socket from the nearest available power circuit ( +6.5A).
