do you HAVE to re-point interior stone walls?

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.42 PM

We have a stone built cottage and are renovating it. We have taken the walls back to the bare stone. We would like to leave them bare, we have cleaned them up and removed any crumbling mortar from the joins, and the wall looks good (aesthetically). We are aware only to re-point using lime based mortar and not to seal - we want to avoid any damp issues in the future - but is it imperative that the wall/s are repointed? Will it still be structurally sound? And how do you make the house as dust free as possible?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I would really need to see it to give a full answer, however I would still point the wall regardless of anything else, I would brush it down to get any dust or debris from the joints then give it a light wash to remove anything you have missed & then point. This should also help with anything structural plus keep the dust down once it is brushed & cleaned up . Hope this helps. Cheers Richard

The mortar itself doesn’t offer and integral structure, however it’s important there is a good solid bond between the blocks and bricks-as long as the mortar is only lost on the front it doesn’t matter as it’ll go through the whole depth of the brick.

Personaley i would repoint the walls with lime based mortar. Giving it time to dry. Thus for sealing the walls with silicone solution (clear) to maintain dust free wall.

Repoint. For all the information expressed above. And my knowledge over the last 33 years.
