Central Heating

Pre heating Combi boiler central heating water

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.42 PM

Is it possible to use a cylinder of hot water to feed a combi boiler such that it doesn't need to use the gas supply to heat the central heating water or at least reduce the amount of gas needed. The cylinder would be heated using Direct solar heating / emersion heater powered of solar panels. The central heating would pass through the cylinder via an indirect coil? Any thoughts gratefully received

Combi boiler works on mains pressure. Unvented cylinder will be needed for the preheat water. Solar should be connected to central heating indirect cylinder coil. Consult manufacturer of the cylinder if it OK to do so if it has not 'solar' one. Solar cylinder should have two coils (bottom for solar, top for gas regular or system boiler).

For the heating system you describe you need a system boiler and an indirect cylinder. a combi boiler is be ok for one source of heat once you incorporate two heats sources you need a larger capacity to supply. Gledhill are a cylinder specialist in such situations

All things are possible but the cost of incorporating all the different items you will need will far exceed any savings you will make. If you are of a green disposition it would be more enjoyable taking a trip to Iceland and feeding the polar bears yourself - and cheaper. Stick with the combi.
