House smells of sewage

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.41 PM

Hi, We getting bad smell from the our property specially from our side extension room. It comes and goes, sometimes once a month or twice a month. It’s been like this for 4-5 years now. We do live near sewage works which sometimes it does smell outside and inside but this smell is very unique and unbearable. We do have one manhole in the garden and not sure if we have one inside the property. Where shall I start? If anyone can help.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Good afternoon This could be a few problems 1) you may have am air admittance valve that is I'm the property . This can cause bad smells 2) could be syphonage where water is getting sucked in allowing no water in bottle trap or u bend causing smells to escape . 3) something on waste pipe isn't sealed fully . All these problems we have came across before. Hope this helps

I would check the toilet waste pipe for the air vent if you have multiple toilet check all of them Check all the waste water trap in your house Try and find the manhole it could be blocked Phone your water supplier they could know where is the manhole Try opening each basin and Bath on its own see if the water running smoothly look for gulping sound

Is there a air admittance valve on system ? Could be a trap or possibly if it’s in the kitchen it might be from washing machine or dishwasher

Hello, This could be a number of problems. i would start by checking all of you traps (Sinks, Shower, Bath, Washing machine etc) these may be slightly blocked or hair could be bridging the trap. i would also check to see if you have an Air admittance valve in the property, these can sometimes get stuck open allowing the smells to be released into your property.
