Removing chimney pots

We had both chimney pots capped last year however are still getting rain down through the bedroom fireplace and can hear the birds hooting when perched on the pot. Our downstairs fireplace is closed off and the bedroom opened up so no working fireplace in the house. Are we best getting the pots removed and the stack completely closed off? What is best to stop rain coming in but also not cause any damp issues further down the line?

your best mite be to drop the chimney below the roof line and tile over

Perhaps the lead flashing and/or the lead back gutter need replacing. Maybe chimney needs repointing or the bricks have become porous.

Drop the stack but you'll need to install and air brick internally at the top so it can ventilate

You could remove the pots and cap the chimney completely but would be advisable to put an air brick in to keep good air flow.
If the chimney is not ventilated properly where warm air meets cold this could lead to condensation inside the chimney breast .
