Replacement gas meter box

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.41 PM

Hi. I'm after a bit of advice please. We have an external wall fitted gas meter box which is damaged and held together with tape. We have been informed by our usual handyman that it requires a Corgi gas engineer to replace the box as the gas supply has to be temporarily cut off. Is this the case or could we hire a handyman to replace the box.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

To replace the actual box would require a Gas Safe registered engineer, however I do believe you can now buy "Overboxes" that are designed to fit over the existing cabinetry and does not involve breaking into the gas supply and therefore does not need a gas safe registered engineer. (Corgi lost their contract to be the governing body years ago) https://www.repairmymeterbox.com/shop/plastic-overboxes/plastic-overbox-for-gas-or-electricity-meter-boxes/

Gas meter box can be replaced just by a gas registered tradesman, who will test the gas installation , according to current legislation.

Yes require Gas Safe Engineer with MET 1 qualification (not all engineers have this qualification) , eaven you don't need to touch the meter i will still recomand to use a gas safe engineer with the above qualification as you still need to respect some building regulations requirements.
