DO YOU NEED BATTENS BEFORE YOU PUT CLADDING ON STRUCTURE?
Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.41 PM
Making a garden office but unsure if we need battens before placing the cladding. Apparently, if you have the breathable membrane wrapped around the ISB ply board then battens are unnecessary. Is this correct?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

without battens it will sweat and create damp rotting your ply boards & your breather membrane. breather membrane does not stop condensation it still needs vented.

You will require treated Battens to be fitted vertically or horizontally depending on what way and what type of cladding you are fitting. There needs to be a sufficient air gap between the cladding and the ply, as it will condensate and cause moisture. If no gap the moisture will cause damp and rot and mould.
Fit the membrane to the ply then Batten the structure at 400mm or 600mm centres depending on cladding weight and manufacturers recommendations.
Fix the cladding with galvanised nails, drywall screws or preferably stainless steel screws.
